Being a hard-working musical businessman, I’ll be foregoing the Civic Holiday this coming Monday and sweating for my pay. Or at least working as hard as a musician can.

I’ll be playing a full band set at 12 noon on Monday August 2 at The Simcoe Rotary Friendship Festival. This is a free festival held in Wellington Park, at the corner of Norfolk St and Bonnie Dr., and there will be great music and general fun times all weekend.

Well, my beloved Orange weren’t able to go all the way in the World Cup, but at least it was an exciting run. And I suppose there are things in life other than soccer - like music.

I’m busy working on new material for my next album. The plan is to record it over this coming winter and release it next spring. I’m quite excited about the new songs and the recording process. I’ll have some more details about where and with whom I’ll be recording in the near future.

In the meantime, I’m playing a full band show in Toronto this Saturday night at The TRANZAC (292 Brunswick Ave). I’ll also have the band with me at The Simcoe Rotary Friendship Festival (12 noon on Monday August 2. I’ll be playing all over Ontario throughout the rest of August, so you can check CONCERTS for the details of these and other upcoming shows.

A belated Happy Canada Day to everyone! I hope you’re all enjoying a great long weekend. I know I am, especially after the Dutch sent Brazil packing in the World Cup - what a pleasant surprise! I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that the Dutch will beat Germany in the final 2-1.

Getting back to more Canadian matters, I recorded a live performance of my song ‘Remembrance Day’ a few days ago for an organization called Hero to Hero. This is a non-political group that supports military personnel serving overseas and their families without taking a pro- or anti-war stance. The video will be posted online soon, so I’ll let you know when it’s up.

Another NXNE has come and gone, and once again I’ve learned a lot, met a lot of good people, and played a fun, sweaty showcase. Now if only the Dutch can make me as pleased with the World Cup.

In non-sporting news, I’ve just been asked to join the bill for a show on Saturday June 26 for a show at The Pearl Company (16 Steven St, Hamilton) with a great folk trio from British Columbia called Morlove. You can check them out at www.morlove.ca. The concert starts at 8pm and costs $7.

I’m playing a NXNE showcase tonight at The Rear View Mirror (193 Baldwin St, Toronto), starting at 1am. Perfect for all the night owls in Toronto. If I get home at 3.30 or 4am, should I get up at 7.30 to watch the Netherlands play in the World Cup? Will cultural heritage trump sleep? I doubt it.

Then tomorrow it’s off to Windsor for two shows - an early one at 8.30 and a late one at 10pm. Check CONCERTS for all the details.

I’m heading down to Sarnia this weekend to perform at the Art Walk festival. It’s a great annual showcase of many different art forms in downtown Sarnia. Other performers include Tom Wilson, Miss Emily Brown, and Pat Robitaille. I’ll be performing on the Acoustic Stage (at the corner of Davis and Christina) at 2pm on Sunday June 6.

Happy Victoria Day. And it even falls on May 24 - another good reason to have a drink in honour of Victoria, a model wife and mother. I also recommend listening to the song ‘Victoria’ by The Kinks. But that’s just me.

The latest news is that I’ll be opening for Justin Rutledge on Monday May 31 at The Casbah in Hamilton. It’s an earlier show with Brandon Bliss on at 8.30, myself at 9, and Justin at 9.45. Tickets are $15 at the door or $12.50 advance (at The Casbah, Dr. Disc, and Cheapies).

And on June 18, I’ll be playing a NXNE showcase at The Rear View Mirror (193 Baldwin St, Kensington Market, Toronto). Maybe Iggy will come check it out - I wonder if I can find him on Facebook.

The show with Peter Katz last week in Toronto was a hoot. Beautiful venue, wonderul audience, and great music - what more could you want?
Next up is a full band show on Saturday May 22 at The Sky Dragon Centre in Hamilton (27 King William St) with The Alco Beat and String Bone, followed by a short tour in Eastern Ontario the following weekend.
And on Monday May 31, I’ll be opening for Justin Rutledge at The Casbah in Hamilton. It’s an early show starting at 8.30. Brandon Bliss is on first, then myself, then Justin. Tickets are $15 at the door or $12.50 advance (from The Casbah, Cheapies, or Dr. Disc).

Just under two weeks to go until the May 14 concert I’ll be playing in Toronto with Peter Katz, a great songwriter and friend with whom I toured the Netherlands and Germany for four weeks in February and March. Peter is releasing a new album called First of the Last to Know, and I’ll be opening the cd release party at The Music Gallery (197 John St, Toronto). Doors open at 7pm, and the show will start at 8. Advance tickets for the May 14 concert are available through TicketWeb.
