COLOUR FILM

Imagine Nick Drake cheering up and living long enough to work with Beck, and you have an idea of how Matthew sounds on his third album Colour Film. Produced by Les Cooper, it calls for a dark room, good headphones, and a glass of single malt.    MORE INFO | Buy on CDBaby | Buy on iTunes

At the risk of blowing my own horn, I’d have to say last night’s release concert for Colour Film was a great success! Many thanks to everyone who came out and helped make it a magical night. It’ll stick with me for a while.

Next up is a performance at the Songwriters Association of Canada’s Blue Bird North songwriters circle on Saturday May 12 at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. I’ll be performing alongside Carole Pope and Tomi Swick, so I’m more than a little excited and honoured. All the details are available HERE.

Well, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t very excited about the special concert I’m playing in Hamilton on Saturday night to celebrate the release of Colour Film. Rehearsals with the band have been sounding and feeling great, and I’m really looking forward to sharing the album with everyone.

The magic takes place on Saturday May 5 at The Pearl Company (16 Steven St). Doors open at 8pm, and the concert starts at 8.30. Admission is $10. Opening the night will be the lovely and talented Lisa Winn.

All signs are pointing to a great concert in a lovely venue – I’d love to see you there!

More fun on film. This video for the song “Colour Film” is composed of the original family Super 8 footage from the early 1960s that inspired the song, which in turn led to the concept for the album Colour Film. Thanks to my Opa and Oma, aunts and uncles, and other relatives who appear in the video. And thanks to Bill Van Dyk who edited the footage and put the video together.

Fun on film. We had a great time making this live video for the song “We’re Dying” from Colour Film, which has been released on Southern Souls. Thanks to Mitch Fillion for the beautiful video and to Andrew Barbisan and Eric Thachuk for having my back. And, of course, thanks to my wife’s cows and chickens for their steadfast support and cooperation.

After three months of touring around Europe, the chickens have come home to roost. Or more accurately, my family and I have returned to our rural home just outside Hamilton. After having so many wonderful experiences in so many far away places, it’s a bit strange but still very good to be back home.

And what better way to settle in than by getting right down to work releasing my new album Colour Film here in Canada? Colour Film will be officially released in North America on May 8, although it is already available through iTunes, if you’re so inclined. To celebrate, I’ll be playing a CD release concert with a full band in my home town of Hamilton. Here are the details:

Saturday May 5
The Pearl Company – 16 Steven St., Hamilton, ON
8pm, $10

Opening the concert will be Lisa Winn, a very talented singer, songwriter, and pillar of the Hamilton music community.

I’m really looking forward to celebrating the release of Colour Film with this special concert, so please come join us if you find yourself in the Hamilton area on May 5. If you’re not in the area then, don’t worry – I’ll be hitting the road to tour Canada later this year, so I’m sure I’ll be playing near you before too long!

I wonder how many times I can post: “I’m having such a great time touring in the Netherlands. The beer is delicious, the people are nice, and the concerts are great with wonderfully attentive, appreciative audiences.” Sadly, it continues to be the truth on this tour!

Posted below is a video of me playing ‘The Good Life’ at a recent concert in Heerlen. What a pleasure to play to a large audience that was so attentive that I didn’t need a microphone to sing such a quiet song. And if you’d like to watch a video of me playing ‘We’re Dying’ at the same concert, just click here.
